Motivation gets you going, but discipline keeps you growing. We often look for the “quantum leap”—the one big break, the one perfect hire, or the one viral moment that will change everything. But real, sustainable growth is rarely explosive; it’s incremental. It is the result of small, seemingly insignificant actions taken day after day, regardless of how you “feel.”
In “The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth,” John C. Maxwell introduces The Law of Consistency: Motivation gets you going, but discipline keeps you growing. If you are only intentional when you feel inspired, you will never reach your potential. Consistency is the bridge between goals and accomplishments.
Many professionals wait for motivation to strike before they tackle their most important growth tasks. The problem? Motivation is a feeling, and feelings are fickle.
To master this law, you have to look at your daily habits through three lenses:
Is your daily routine working for you or against you? Score each statement using the scale below:
| Score | Description |
| 1 | Never / Not at all |
| 2 | Rarely / Needs significant work |
| 3 | Sometimes / Average |
| 4 | Often / Above average |
| 5 | Consistently / A core strength |

The secret to the Law of Consistency is realizing that discipline is a muscle. You don’t “have” discipline; you practice it. When you stop asking “Do I feel like doing this?” and start asking “Does this align with the leader I am becoming?”, you break the cycle of inconsistency. You stop being a victim of your emotions and start being the master of your habits.
“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day-in and day-out.” — Robert Collier (quoted by Maxwell)
John Maxwell famously uses the “Rule of Five”—five things he does every single day to move toward his goals (Read, Think, File, Ask Questions, Write).
Action Step: Identify your own “Rule of Three.” What are the 3 non-negotiable actions you will take every single day this week to grow your business or your leadership? Write them down and post them where you’ll see them before you start your day.
Consistency is the hardest law to follow alone because we are our own easiest person to fool. My coaching provides the external structure and accountability needed to turn your “Rule of Three” into a permanent lifestyle.
