Most people are obsessed with the “climb.” They focus on the title, the salary, and the status, assuming that if they just work hard enough, they will reach the top. But a ladder is only as stable as the wall it’s leaning against. If your character is weak, the higher you climb, the more spectacular your eventual fall will be.
In “The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth,” John C. Maxwell introduces The Law of the Ladder: Character growth determines the height of your personal growth. You cannot consistently perform at a level that is higher than your character. Your skills might get you to the top, but only your character will keep you there.
We often focus on “Horizontal Growth” (skills, networking, accolades) while ignoring “Vertical Growth” (integrity, discipline, values).
In my coaching, we focus on these three non-negotiables for a stable climb:
Are you building a career that can support your ambitions? Score each statement using the scale below:
| Score | Description |
| 1 | Never / Not at all |
| 2 | Rarely / Needs significant work |
| 3 | Sometimes / Average |
| 4 | Often / Above average |
| 5 | Consistently / A core strength |

The Law of the Ladder reminds us that the most important work a leader does is the work they do on themselves. When you focus on being a better person, you naturally become a better leader. You stop worrying about the height of the ladder and start focusing on the strength of the rungs.
“Most people want to change the world to improve their lives, but the world they need to change first is the one inside themselves.” — John Maxwell
Identify one area in your professional life where you have been “cutting corners”—maybe it’s a difficult conversation you’ve avoided, a small exaggeration you’ve made, or a commitment you haven’t kept.
Action Step: Choose one of your core values and intentionally live it out in a visible way today. If your value is “Appreciation,” find three people to specifically thank for their contributions.
Character growth is the “lonely” work of leadership, but it doesn’t have to be. As your strategic advisor, I provide the objective mirror you need to ensure your character is ready for the next level of your career.
